Among the Hidden 6

1. Why doesn't Luke tell his mother about the vent? Would you have told her? What significance do you think this will play in the novel (if any)?

  1. 1. Luke does not tell his mom about the vent because he does not want her to take away his only source of seeing the outside world. Also she would have told the dad and he would have gotten really mad at him for secretly being able to see outside. I definitly would have not told the mom that I could see outside if it was my only way. I think this will effect the rest of the story because maybe his parents will find out that he has been looking outside.

  2. 1. He doesn't tell because he is afraid that she will tell his dad and he will not allow him.
2 No I would not because he might have to stop
    3. He might get in trouble if someone sees

  3. 1. I think Luke doesn't tell his mom about the vent because she might take his only sight of outside. Also, if the dad found out, he would get furious with Luke for not telling him he can see outside. I would have not told my mom because if it was my only source of outside I would want to keep it. This might effect the rest of the story because Luke will still look out the vent and someone might see him or he will see someone else.

  4. Jason,
Number 3 is not clear, what are you talking about. He might get in trouble if someone sees what? In number 2, he might have to stop what? Please make your ideas more clear.

  5. I think that Luke didn't tell his mom about the vent because maybe he just wanted to keep it a secret. His family knows everything that he does because he can't go out of the house. Also maybe he doesn't want his dad to take away the only way he can see the outside world.

  6. Lily,
You didn't say if you would tell you parents. Also, think about how this will relate to the rest of the story.

  7. Jason,
Why would Luke's dad not let him look outside?
In answer number two, why do you talk about the character when the answer is about you?

  8. Lily,
When you say the parents know everything, why do you say this? The parents don't know everything. They have no idea that Luke feels miserable about some of the choices.

  9. Devon,
How would looking outside through vent make a difference? If Luke knows nobody can see him through the vent then why would the parents get mad if he has been looking outside?

  10. 1. I think Luke did not tell his mom because he does not want to tell about his only way to have fun. Surely his mother would take it away and cover it imediately after he told her, so why would he want to be miserable?
    2. I f I were in Luke's position I would not tell. Life would be pointless without any fun, so minuse well be caught by the population police and have the punishments happen to you.
    3. I think that Luke will either find out about possibly another shadow child, or be caught and maybe some how slip by and he will be stranded.

  11. Devon/Lily:

Devon, I like what you are saying, but what will happen if they find out? Is being able to see outside what the parents want to stop or Luke being able to be seen?
Lily, Why would he want to keep a secret? Is there a point to have a secret just to have a secret? Also I bet his family does not know everything, otherwise the whole house would be covered up. Besidese this how do you think this will play a part in the story?

  12. Devon,
How do you think the parents would act if they found out he was looking outside?

  13. Interesting posts....I agree with all of you that there are some things that could be explained in a more meaningful way. If someone asks you a question, please respond. Your questions are helping to extend the thinking of others, but I'm not seeing the expansion because people are not answering. ;(

  14. courtney, Luke's dad won't let him look outside because he is afraid Luke will be caught.
    I made a mistake on number 2

  15. Jason if you made a mistake on number 2? why don't you fix it? what would you change it to? It gets a general point down, but isn't very clear. You should just try to add on to it.

  16. I think that he didn't tell his mom about the vent because people might see him when he is looking out so the parents would most likely cover it up. If they covered it up Luke would lose the only way to see outside. I don't think this will play a part in the rest of the story. I think it was just put in there to say that Luke is a little rebelious.

  17. Luke didn't tell his mom because then she would tell his dad who is paranoid over Luke being seen. Then they would cover it up and Luke would loose his only connection left with outside life. He wouldn't be able to see outside and then all he could do is sit in his room all day.

I would not have told her for the exact same reasons Luke doesn't tell her.

I think that the vent will play some part in the story. Luke might be seen looking through them or he might see something of interest to him through them.

  18. Luke didnt tell his mother because he feared if he did his father would force the vent to be closed for ever.

I would nto have told because if I was in Lukes position I would want at least 1 glance now and then at the outside world.

I think the vent will play a great deal in the rest of the novel. Maybe some will see him and report it. or he will see maybe anotehr shadow child.

  19. It is lukes only chance to see light of the sun again. if he tells he might have it covered and he is thoroughly trapped forever.

I would not have told her for the same reasons

I think that his represents a hope that flickers inside of some one that can be abused if he ever tells . then it will be extinguished. he could make that hope grow and live again

  20. Luke doesn't tell his mother because that vent is the closest thing to being outside and if his mum finds out, then she might tell the dad and the dad might find it " too dangerous" and make it so Luke can't see out of it any more. Luke was already separated from the forest and being outside, and now that he's finally close to it again, he doesn't want to be separated from that too.

    2. I probably wouldn't tell my mum ether. If i was in his situation, then I'd want to stay as close to the outdoors as possible too.

    3. I think this will mean that he wont like tell his parents everything. If he ever wants to become a normal child, then he's going to have to take some drastic measures, and thats just a start.
