Among the Hidden 7

1. Why does Luke's brother get joy out of teasing him when he can't even hear it?
2. Why do you think the author included this part?

  1. 1. I think Luke's brother gets joy out of that because Luke can not hear what he is saying so he will not be offended. His brother always gets joy out of teasing Luke so he will not get in trouble if nobody can hear it. Also he gets joy out of this because it makes him feel better than Luke.
    2. I think the author included this part to show the relationship between the brothers.

  2. 1. They like to do that because they can say mean things with out getting in trouble.
2.I think he showed it because he wanted to show that they are mean to Luke.

  3. 1. Luke's brothers still get joy because they can see that Luke is trying to hear but he can not, so it makes him mad, so therefor is brothers are happy because they get joy from his misery. They also probably think it is funny that he can not hear them.
    2. I think the author included this part because it shows how Luke feels, and it could give a twist later if his brothers help him in something.

  4. 1. I think Luke's brother gets joy out of teasing him when he can't hear it because he knows he can't hear him which makes it even more funny. Also, people who make fun of others only do it because it makes them feel better when they're insecure about themselves or even jealous. In this case, Luke's brother might be jealous of Luke because he doesn't have to do anything so he makes fun of him.

    2. I think the author included this part so it changes the main characters emotions. Also, to show how the brothers feel about to each other.

  5. I think that his brother teases him because he is mad at his parents that he gets more attention. But Luke deserves more attention considering he doesn't talk to anyone else.

  6. Jason,
Your response is confusing. Can you use names instead of he and they? Why don't the brothers get in trouble?

  7. Stephen,
When you say there is going to be a twist, what do you mean? What kind of twist?

  8. Courtney/Lily:

Courtney, I like your ideas, but why would they be jealous of Luke? Luke has no priveleges and can not even go outside.
Lily, I see where you are going, but lately in the book Luke has not been getting much attention. Also why do you think the author included this part?

  9. stephen, what type of twist do you think it will give?

  10. courtney what could Lukes brothers be jealous of if he can't leave the house?

  11. I think the author included this because it would show tension between the brothers. I think that there is tension between the brothers because the brother is jealous about Luke getting more attention. Luke gets more attention because his parents feel that they have to make up for the fact that he can't go outside.

  12. Courtney,
Why is it that when people make fun of a person it's more funny when they aren't there.

  13. Lily-I appreciate your last question. It has made me think. I know it was not directed at me, but here is what I think....

It is possible that things are more humorous at someone's expense when they are not there because when they are there and you have to look at the pain in their eyes, it makes the joker feel badly. There are some existential people that believe that this is because all people are connected in some way, so when you hurt someone else, you are truly hurting a part of yourself.

There are other possible reasons, what does everyone think?

  14. I am not seeing the teamwork that I would like to see. Try to focus on supporting each others' ideas and gently guiding each idea to a new or more developed thought. A few of the last blog option entries I have read from this group, seem more critical than helpful. Think about this for future blogs.

  15. Thanks for pointing that Courtney and Jason. the twist I mean is that if it seems like Lukes brothers hate him, and Luke is in need of help and his brothers help him, that would be unexpected because they hate him.

  16. I think about Lily's question is that people might get more joy by teasing not face to face because they aren't face to face. Adding on to what Miss Bailin said, it is easier for a lot more people to say it when the other can't hear because they may not be as mean to where they can't stand it to have sad eyes looking back at you because you just hurt their feelings.

  17. I think Luke's brother makes fun of him when he can't hear because it makes him feel lucky to be a regular kid and not a shadow child. He doesn't say it in front of Luke though because he doesn't want him to feel bad.

  18. I think Luke's brothers make tease him when he can't hear because they are his brother's. They enjoy teasing him because it gives them satisfaction. If Luke can't hear them he can't say something to make them feel guilty.

I think the author included this part because it shows that even though Luke has a hard life, it's not all pity and grief he gets. He gets teased too just like a regular kid.

  19. I believe that they did it because since he cant hear them just like any otehr normal brotehr would do they find pleasure in Lukes 'situation'. Also as Gabby said Luke cant say anything back to hurt them or make them feel bad.

I think the author included this because it shows that anyone gets teased by siblings. And the book isn't all sad and grief for Luke.

  20. i think this is because luke will not find a way to insult him. It is like talking behind his back

I think the author included this because luke shoudn't pay attention or worry because what you don't know can't hurt you.

  21. I think because thats what older siblings do. Even if Luke can't hear him, his brother will find pleasure teasing him to get his satisfactory of it.

I think the author included that because he's going to need to learn to ignore it because if he ever goes on that rally with Jen, then he's going to need to pass it by when someone says stuff like that. And, ya know, all siblings do it so I think the author is trying to set a mood in the family, and trying to show that even if the family has a third child, they're still a normal family with brothers who annoy the brains out of each other.
