  1. In this time there are population police that only allow two children per household. They will punish a third. Luke is the third child of his family. He can't go to school or be seen. Now people are cutting down the forest so luke can't go outside.

  2. 1. The story so far has introduced the character Luke. The population laws prevent women from having more the two kids. Luke is the third child of a family of five and that is illegal. His family makes him hidden because of the population police. If they were to catch him they would take him away and perhaps even kill him.

  3. 1. In chapters one and two, the government is tearing down the woods outside of Luke's house. Luke is now not allowed to go outside because someone could report him for being the third child of the family. Luke's mom tells him why he can't go outside; the population law. The population law states that each family can only have two children, but Luke is the third.

  5. 2 I really liked the part where he can hide and his mom can put all his stuff away so fast that no one sees he existed. I liked it because it has so much action because it goes so fast.
3 I think it is so unfair that you can only have two children. This is unfair because it should be the parents choice
4 No, this book is very clear and understandable

  6. 2. The part that caught my attention the most was when Luke's mom tells Luke why he can't go outside and be like his brothers. It caught my attention because it seemed odd how there is a law about having only two children.

  7. 3. I feel very sad for Luke. That would just be an awful life! Not being able to go anywhere or do anything. I just want to cry for him. I also feel mad at the government because I don't think that they should have any say in how many children or pets I can have.

  9. 3. I felt sad over the first two chapters because Luke has to be in hiding all the time. For example, Luke can not go to school without people reporting him for being a third child. Also, I am mad at the government for having a law about having only two children per family.

  11. (chapters 2-4)
    1. Luke hs not gone outside for a week. He iws not even aloud to look out the windows. Every room he goes into has to haave the windows draped. Because of a construction worker coming to their house asking for air conditioning, Luke can not go into the kitchen to eat with his family, because it would be suspicious to cover the windows when it is hot. When Luke goes to his room inthe atic, he notices that he can see outside through the vent. 2. The part that caught my attention was when he did not tell his mom about the vent because that probably means something is going to happen. 3. I feel really sad for Luke because he can not meet new people or even go outside. My life would be pointless if it was like Lukes. 4. The text is very clear ro me and I have no questions.

  12. Chapter 1. We meet Luke and his family while they are eating dinner. The family is going to sell the woods that were behind their house, and Luke is extemely against that. The book tells us that Luke is not supposed to be alive because there is a Population Law that says you can only have 2 children. Luke is not supposed to go outside or even near the windows for fear that someone might see him. Somebody comes to their door and Luke hides while the mother puts his plate in the cupboard and his chair in the corner.
Chapter 2. Luke was 6 years old when he asked why he had to hide when someone came to their house. Luke has two older brothers Matthew and Mark. If someone had two kids then they had another one they had to get rid of the third child.

  15. In these two chapters the main charater, Luke is presented. Where Luke lives families can only have two children. If you have more than two the Population Police will come and take the third and unfortunately kill it. Luke is a third child also known as a shadow child. He must never be seen. Luke is never allowed to go outside when people are out there. If he is found he is in serious danger!

  16. 1. In chapters 1 and 2, the forest around Luke's house is being cut down, so he will not be able to go out side anymore. He is the third child and families are only allowed to have two children. Luke cannot be seen because otherwise the Population Police would come and kill him. Now that the forest is being cut down, Luke has a greater chance of being seen so he has to go into more severe hidding. He has to eat dinner on the steps and hide in the attic, which is his room. When Luke is not allowed to go out at ALL anymore, he remembers the vents in the attic and peers through them. He then had a way to see others.

  17. 2. The part that caught my attention the most was when he said he'd never seen another human besides his family and the beggar. It caught my attention because it surprised that besides in picture books he had never seen anyone else. I guess when you think about that makes sense, if someone saw him he would be in trouble and they live in the woods.

    3. I feel sad and astonished. Sad for Luke and that he has to have thins way of life. That he has never seen another human or had a real friend. I would just hate to live that way. Astonished because I can't believe that they would ever have such a terrible law and consequence for the law. Death? That seems harsh. I'm also astonished at how inconsiderate his brothers are. When Luke has to hide forever instead of feeling pity for him, they whine about more chores. I would hope my brother would pity me a little more.

    4. I do not have any questions. I totally understand the book.

  18. 1. In Chapters 1 & 2 Luke is a child who is not allowed to go outside because the government in cuttting down the woods around his house.
Because of a population law Luke is not allowed to be seen by other people so now he is not allowed to even look out the window or go outside, by the end of only chapter 2 luke is going crazy wishing to go outside and pllay in the wood.

    2. Along with Gabby the part that suprised or amazed me was when he said the only humans he had even seen was a beggar and his own family. Thats just pretty scary. I mean how would you feel if you were only allowed to see your family?

    3. I feel sad for Luke. I mean I would probably go crazy if I had never had any friends or seen any humans besides my family or never allowed to go outside if other people were outside. Finally, i feel bad for Luke because the only time he was allowed to go outside was in teh woods and teh government is now cutting down those same woods cutting off Luke from ever going outside.

    4. No I do not have any questions at the moment. I understand the book totally.

  19. 1. Luke is a third child which is restricted by the population law. Families are only allowed to have two. Luke used to have the whole backyard to play in but now that the government has bought the woods he will have to hide in his house forever.
    2. The part that caught my attention the most was that Luke had to hide forever and never live a normal lif3e. Of cours he never knew what a normal life was like and all the other things his brothers should be appreciating. He would not feel as bad as he really should but I am astounded.
    3. I am mortyfied that things like this really happens. this is all like a sudden death of someone i don't know in some horrible way. Like in the book "The Flags of Our Fathers"
That was a book that retold of the events at Iwo Jima.
    4. Why is there a population law? why does the Government have so much power?

  20. 1. Well, Luke is a third child forced to hide so he won't be sentenced to death, and his family won't get in any trouble with the government and the population police. Ya see, families are only allowed to have 2 children due to the food crisis. Luke was able to go out and play in the trees and be in the open until the governent decided to cut down the forest that hid Luke from preying eyes.
    2. The part that caught my attention the most was how that third children had to hide from everybody. They could never live a normal life and would be alone ecept for their familys:(
    3. I feel horible that kids have to stay away from humanity. Its pretty much death to anyone that that is caught, too.
    4. I have no ?s.
